Mixtape Wednesday features hand-picked vinyl mixes and the record-collectors who created them. Find out what inspired this mix in the section below.
Your Name + Location:
My name's Hayling, a keyboardist/producer/engineer from all over the East Coast. I grew up in New York, went to school in Philly, and formed Columbia Nights with my two bandmates down in DC. When I'm not musicking with the crew, I'm working on an MBA and Masters in Public Policy at Harvard.
What inspired this mix? Tell us a little about it:
Every so often, my bandmates and I gather at Vinyl Fridays with one purpose in mind: to absorb LP records. Along with a small group of friends, we fellowship over the history preserved in dusty grooves and liner notes. Usually these sessions become conversations about recording and musicianship that flow into the wee hours. As habit became tradition in our collective, the music shared during Vinyl Fridays began to influence our sound. We decided to record one of these sessions after our label boss DJ Junior asked us to put together a mix for his Sound Traveler series.
What was your process for putting the mix together?
Basically, we just documented one of our Vinyl Fridays by ripping the LPs we played in real time. Later, I worked on the transitions and edits to make a seamless listening experience.
Favorite song on the mix?
Full disclosure: it's recorded and mixed to feel like vinyl, but the last tune on there is one of ours, and the sole digital song in the collection. We ended the mix with "All In", a Flying Lotus cover we gave the Herbie Hancock Head Hunters treatment.
What’s next on your plate these days?
Look out for more sounds from Columbia Nights soon. We're just about wrapped up with our first full-length LP, which will be released on Record Breakin' Music in the near future.
